Some Atlantic Ocean Facts
The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest ocean. It’s area covers 20% of the surface of the earth or roughly 106 million square kilometers (about 41 million square miles). In contrast the Pacific Ocean is twice the size of the Atlantic. Geographically the Atlantic Ocean is an “S” shaped based that rests between the west coasts of Europe and Africa on its’ eastern border and the east coast of the America’s on the western most border. The Atlantic is famous for the Mid-Atlantic Ridge – the longest running mountain range in the world. This range runs longitudinally between Iceland in the north to just below the southern most tip of South America (58 degree latitude). In effect this ridge separates the ocean into two large troughs (containers).

The Atlantic’s deepest point is found at the Puerto Rican Trench at a depth of 28,232 feet or over five miles down. The Atlantic touches the shores of over 93 countries. It harbors many of the worlds top tourist destinations and provides industry for fishing, mining, and as we move into the future energy (oil, wind, wave power – and more).

Beach Haven at the Jersey Shore. You can spend forever just watching the waves – they never stop and this is exactly the way they looked and sounded in my youth. Thanks to my parents for taking me to this wonderful place.
